Raúl Ortega
Career and artistry of a great flamenco figure
From Alcorcón to the world
Born in Alcorcón (Madrid), Raúl Ortega is a flamenco dancer who has taken this art form to the highest level thanks to his unique combination of technique, sensitivity, and stage presence. Since his debut in 1996 with María Rosa’s company in The Three-Cornered Hat, Ortega has stood out for his passion, elegance, and ability to transmit emotions, qualities that have made him one of the great figures of contemporary flamenco.
Early steps and international recognition
His talent soon led him to work as principal dancer and choreographer alongside great masters such as Antonio Canales, María Pagés, and Luis Dávila “Luisillo.” With them, he toured countries like Japan, Mexico, France, and Switzerland, sharing flamenco with audiences from different cultures and solidifying his international reputation.
In 2001, Ortega reached a turning point in his career when he joined Rafael Amargo’s company, performing in highly acclaimed productions such as Poeta en Nueva York, Amor Brujo, and Tablao. His commanding presence and refined technique positioned him as one of the most respected names on the flamenco scene.
Signature creations: a personal stamp
Beyond his work with renowned companies, Raúl Ortega has also developed his own projects, showcasing his creative vision of flamenco. Among his most celebrated works are:
- “Flamenco”, created and directed by Ortega himself.
- “Hermanos de baile”, performed more than 60 times across Spain’s National Theatre Network, reaching 50,000 spectators in five seasons.
- “Flamenco Inside”, a pure flamenco show with 13 performers on stage, premiered in Madrid and later acclaimed in Japan.
He also explored new artistic territories with Jesús Fornies vs. Raúl Ortega, a groundbreaking production that blends flamenco and circus arts in a visually stunning performance.
On stage and on screen
Ortega’s artistry has also reached the big screen, with leading roles in Cuando te toca el duende (2003) and El crimen de una novia (2005). At the same time, he continued performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to Broadway, where he took part in Poeta en Nueva York.
In Spain, he has headlined major festivals such as the Viernes Flamencos in Jerez and opened his own venue in Jerez de la Frontera, Tablao Flamenco Puro Arte, reinforcing his commitment to spreading flamenco worldwide.
Current recognition
Throughout his career, Raúl Ortega has shared the stage with legendary artists such as Juan Moneo “El Torta,” La Piñona, and Pepe Flores. He has been invited to international festivals like the Gorbio Flamenco Festival in France and collaborated in Japan with traditional musicians led by Yasko Nagamine, proving that flamenco is a universal language.
