NAME: Mercedes Ruiz Muñoz “Mercedes de Córdoba”
PLACE AND DATE OF BIRTH: Córdoba (San Miguel neighbourhood), 9th January 1980.
FAMILY: Mercedes Ruíz, known as Mercedes de Córdoba, was born in a flamenco family from Córdoba. She has been in the dance world since she was four years old and at the age of six she had already collaborated in the film “Montoyas y Tarantos”.
ESTUDIES: One of her first flamenco teachers was Ana María López, from the flamenco group Los Cernícalos, she taught her for seven years. At the age of 17 she studied the degree in Spanish Dance in the Dramatic Art High School of Dance in Cordoba, in which she got excellent grades. She coursed two years in the Classic Ballet of the Conservatory of Seville with Araleo and later she started to perform in Tablao Flamenco Cordobes where, according to Mercedes, “learned a lot”.
She completed her studies with the masters Javier Latorre, Javier Barón, Milagros Mengíbar, Manolete, Antonio Márquez, Eva la Yerbabuena, José Antonio, Inmaculada Aguilar, Aída Gómez and Granero, among others.
CAREER: Throughout her career, Mercedes de Córdoba has worked along with some of the best Spanish flamenco dancers.
At the age of seven she joined the company of Manuel Morao in which she listened to the best flamenco singers, an experience which, according to the dancer, was “a cornerstone” in the beginning of her career.
At the age of 11 Javier Latorre brought her with him and Eva la Yerbabuena to the Bienal of Lyon. Later, at the age of 17, she joined the Andalusian Ballet directed by José Antonio, performing in the opera “La Vida Breve” in the re-inauguration of the Royal Theatre.
In 1998, she collaborated in the company of Antonio el Pipa, performing in the Jerez Festival, Opera de Graft (Austria), Cultural Centre of La Villa (Madrid) and the Festival of La Unión (Murcia).
She has also been part of the companies of Javier Barón and Eva la Yerbabuena in which she started working the year 1998 participating in the shows Eva, 5 Mujeres, La Voz del Silencio, A cuatro voces, El Huso de la Memoria, Federico según Lorca orCuando yo era, and performing as a soloist in Lluvia and in The best choreographies of Eva. Besides, she performed as a soloist in the show Cálida Hondura by Daniel Navarro.
Mercedes has great qualities, her style is depurated and, after her success as a soloist and after being awarded in the Bienal of Seville 2002 she decided to start her own company and she has already released several shows.
AWARDS: In 2001 she got the award “Antonio Gades” in the National Contest of Córdoba, the first show she presented on. In 2002 she got the first award in the Bienal of Seville. In August 2013 she got the Second Dance Award in the Sing Festival of Las Minas in La Unión. The same year she was awarded with the first dance award in the XX National Contest of Flamenco Art in Córdoba.
